"Hospital management software" usually emphasises the operational and administrative side — patient registration, appointments, admissions, billing, inventory, and reporting. It keeps the hospital running as a business.
Hospital Information System (HIS): clinical + administrative
A Hospital Information System is broader. Alongside administration, a full HIS includes the clinical record (EMR), computerised order entry, and the diagnostic systems — laboratory (LIS) and radiology (RIS/PACS). It manages information across the whole patient journey, not just the front desk and the cashier.
Where the terms overlap — and what actually matters
In practice, the labels matter less than the coverage and the integration. The question to ask is whether clinical data (diagnoses, orders, results, prescriptions) and administrative data (registration, billing, stock, accounts) live in one connected system or in separate silos.
